Extended Research

I hoped to find a collection that related to art, making, learning, domestic magic, and the everyday containing objects that I could respond to with maybe a painting or still life.

My place painting showing domestic magic and the everyday would be a great vehicle.

I carried out a search of the internet and the suggested collection and institutions on our list.

Finally, I settled on a UAL collection, it would fit with both my story telling interests and my collecting interests.

I email to Jacqueline Winston-Silk in the UAL Camberwell Collections (a suggestion from Eve) and she responded immediately and Aladdin’s cave opened.

The ILEA Collection looks perfect, It contains learning objects that were collected to inspire learning and exactly what I was looking for, now to make a selection.

The first photo to appear has taken my breath away. I am hooked. They are what we thought of when I was growing up as treasure troves. I've asked around no one I know remembers these visiting their school.

I would love to have a first-hand account of how they were used.

I have drawn up a list of objects I would like to find to respond to.

First I shall interview them as per. the Proust questionnaire that Proust allegedly used to flesh out his characters while writing, and see what stories emerge. I shall probably do some drawings and them create a still life to paint.

Rather like my other collaborations, this is giving me a timetable and a structure to work to. I may impose some time limits to stop me from getting lost.

My plan is to produce a painting that holds the feeling that I get from my chosen objects.

What I would also like to do is to have a second collection chosen by someone else. Maybe I can ask Jacqueline.

- If not I can probably use the system to do a search and make a few selections that way.

This will be a sort of portrait of a certain section of the collection that could be used by the collection as a visual reference or I may find other uses once I start.

I shall most certainly go for a few pottery items and I spotted some animals tea pots and a lot of domestic home wear.

It could be a very quick project or if i can i may be able to make a large painting it will depend on just how much access I can get.
