As we prepare our Copeland proposals and most of our co-hort are finalising their Unit 2 On line submissions, this is very much on our minds.
where-
will almost define who it is for and what you may put there and may be why it is there.
What happens when you take art out of the art gallery?
Post lockdown institutions need to think about the experience, as do the artists.
This thought takes me back to Dan’s project - where I realise I could hang my work away from the walls and use projection for a final piece.
We examined the ‘white space’ and the ‘gallery‘.- Tap for the brief.
My results changed my thoughts about how, and where to hang my work and what it was for.
Public spaces
I‘m warming to the idea of exhibiting in ‘Public spaces’ - they are a good place to be, especially now we have had to move so many of our gatherings outside due to our Covid Pandemic
The old adage you don’t know what you have until, you miss it, rings true.
Some of our outdoor spaces had become very neglected and austere, they need some TLC to make them comfortable I think Artworks could facilitate this Especially if they were relivent to the places community, history or future.
If relevant and accessible they could attract lottery funding, or other public money to produce.
I have enjoyed this change of congregating it feels more open and I want to some how get involved with the outside everyday space - especially ones that allow us to come together break bread and have a good chat.
Art attracts and should be used to set the scene and mood.
Unfriendly spaces places could become much more welcoming, intresting even more domestic.
Places you might want to linger and chill in. I started to research this idea.
Not everyones idea of Utopia As Brooke Bourgeois so beautifully illustrates.

Museums and galleries have been accused of becoming restaurants with art attached. Entertainment. I am happy about this change it brings the domestic in to the gallery and makes it more accessible. I would like to communicate with our whole population, not just the intellectuals. Art for all.

A lot was discussed, but I didn't really feel a conclusion was reached that I was interested in, I think they were not seeing the whole picture, the future.
Another talk is happening this week which I think maybe a bit more informative about the direction that the public Institution are heading for good or bad.

This also looks promising, but expensive, so Ill read their conclusion post event.
A Charleston Event.
Jeremy Deller in conversation with Helen Marriage, Artistic Director of Artichoke, as they discuss where art can belong and why we should break down the traditional physical barriers dictating who, how and where art can happen. Chaired by founder Director of Situations, Claire Doherty, renowned for pioneering new forms of public art.

Collaboration
I love collaboration both these speakers do too, I think it is a great way to learn.
They both often use collaboration in their practices to make them work and create learning situations, as this talk will evidence, I Hope.
I collaborated with Jeremy for a week of printmaking, which I found very productive.
Also with Maria on a commissioned interior mural, and then with Emily on a hanging where we worked independently, and then in a day bought our practices together in one item.
